As someone who is both keenly interested in healthcare reform and as someone who runs a business, I’ve been following Health Promotion Advocates’ efforts to gain support for legislation around workplace health promotion.
Chairman Dr. Michael O’Donnell – who has long recognized the power of prevention – and his team have created a web-based tool that makes it easy to send a letter of support for this legislation to your Senators and Representative. Health Promotion Advocates pays for the cost of faxing the letters, so there’s no charge to you for doing your (lower-case d) democratic duty.
Plus, the site gives you a chance to review your faxes before they are sent and provides details on the specific health promotion provisions supported. This effort takes a neutral stand on overall health care reform and pushes for health promotion in whatever big changes are made.
We join other organizations in the healthcare space – such as Johnson & Johnson – in supporting this grassroots, non-partisan campaign. So check it out – the goal is to have at least 10,000 faxes sent by September 15.
A worthy effort, and as wellness goes, far less taxing than doing 10,000 sit-ups.

1Hi, Luke,
Glad to see you like the Health Promotion Advocates’ approach–I am the KY coordinator for this effort and the organization surpassed the goal of 10,000 faxes to Congress earlier this month! Today we had a conference call of all the volunteers and Michael O’Donnell gave a good update on the legislation and its chances of passing (high in his estimation).
One thing I’m interested in is the proposal to increase the allowed differential in premium between wellness participants and non-participants. Today it’s 20% and the proposals range from 30-50%…this could be a real driver for people to join and stay in wellness programs.
I hope you are well and enjoying the first of NE fall weather…
Regards,
Karen
